Implementing a new business system (ERP, CRM, etc.) a big investment with a great deal of complexity. Since these implementations require a special set of skills, most companies rely on third parties to help them get the project done. You probably have the subject matter experts that know your business and you probably have a partner that knows their business software. However, you may need an Independent Implementation Adviser that can monitor and help keep the project moving forward.
Imagine you need to build a new building to produce your latest product line. You have three options:
1. Hire your own team - architects, bricklayers, steel workers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, etc. This gives you ultimate flexibility and would be a large distraction for your company. Unless you are in the construction business, you would be left with equipment, skills, and experience that would not add value to your new product line.
2. Hire a General Contractor - complete outsourcing of the project. This gives you the least amount of capital investment upfront however; you may not have the depth of understanding of the building process to ensure that you are getting a good deal. Will it really take 6 weeks to put the roof on or should it only take 6 days? Unless you have an expert on staff, it may be hard to get clear unbiased answers.
3. Hire a General Contractor and an Adviser - outsource the project and have an independent adviser help you keep the project on track. This gives you the best of both options. The adviser will advocate on your behalf with the general contractor to ensure you are getting a great deal and that things stay on track. They will know how long the roof should take to put on and how much they should charge.
